Joey Kocur 1996-1997
IHL San Antonio Dragons
Detroit Red Wing great Joey Kocur spent 15 years in the NHL, primarily with the red Wings (winning 2 Stanley Cups) but also with the Rangers (1 Stanley Cup). Kocur is said by many to be the hardest hitting punching Tough Guy in NHL history. As evidence of this he often had issues with fight damage to his own hand. Following the 1996 season Kocur left the NHL for the IHL San Antonio Dragons but then Red Wing Captain Steve Yzerman asked then Red Wing Head Coach Scotty Bowman to bring Kocur back to the Red Wings. Bowmen did bring Kocur back and that same year the red Wings went on to win the Stanley Cup that year and the following year.
Kocur amassed 2519 penalty minutes in the NHL making him tied for 21st all time. At his height in popularity he was half of the famous “Bruise Brothers”, being him and Bob Probert.
